2026 reference
Mobility planning in Honolulu sits at the intersection of a large older-adult population, island geography, and a travel system that connects families across Oʻahu and beyond.
This page brings together recent public figures from the U.S. Census Bureau and Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation Airports. Population figures describe Honolulu County. Airport figures describe the statewide system, and each statistic makes that scope clear.

More than one in five Honolulu County residents is age 65 or older. That makes everyday transportation planning a practical issue for many households, especially when a change in health or driving habits affects a familiar routine.
At the same time, Hawaii’s airport system handled more than 38 million passenger movements in 2024, including more than 15 million interisland movements. Those figures help explain why reliable planning for appointments, family visits, and travel days matters across the islands.

Methodology and sources
Population estimates come from the U.S. Census Bureau. The 2025 population total and 2020–2024 age share come from QuickFacts. The counts for residents age 65 and over and age 80 and over come from the 2024 American Community Survey 1-year estimates.
Airport figures are statewide calendar-year 2024 totals reported by the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation Airports. They are not counts for Daniel K. Inouye International Airport alone.
