Where it began

The mailbox that changed everything.

Before rideshare apps became part of everyday life, Wayne Higashi operated My Driver, a California subscription transportation service for seniors. It began close to home: after his father, then in his mid-eighties, backed into Wayne’s mailbox for a second time after a family gathering, Wayne knew it was time to have a hard conversation about driving.

His father reluctantly, and tearfully, agreed to stop driving if Wayne could find a suitable alternative. He could not. Limousines were too expensive, and taxis were unfamiliar and felt unsafe. So Wayne built a subscription service for octogenarians that could cost less than car ownership, with a driver and vehicle each client came to know.

Over more than a decade, My Driver grew to a fleet of six vehicles and served more than 30 clients, including Wayne’s parents and mother-in-law. None came willingly. They hated the thought of losing their independence, and their adult children reached out to enroll them, often over their objections. Once they experienced the service, clients became customers for life, literally.

After Wayne’s relatives passed away, he handed the business to his drivers and retired to Hawaii. Fifteen years later, Wayne and his wife of 63 years are both 82, and he sees the same need again. Kupuna LIMO is the next chapter of that original idea.
